Paul Copenhagen 5/2/03

Update (5/7/03) From Arno Guzek:

Hi Steve, I was present as well. I have this to add: Well, I had it coming to 16 people. One of the musicians was a teenager in 1991 when Paul played Copenhagen. Here's a little story. He had an extra ticket which he sold for 200 $ to one of the guys of YD and another for less. After the show he grabbed a taxi, went to our local airport, in through a hole in the fench round the airport, into the tourbus, had pics taken and got autographs. Today he's our national superstar at Capitol but he wasn't allowed to say hello to Paul, only four top executives of Capitol was allowed to say hi before the show started.

The winner of the competition wasn't a big McCartney fan. He was rather heavy and wearing a full printed Metallica T-shirt. Wow going to a McCartney soundcheck!!

The 17.14 songs had pieces of Michelle after my opinion. I've got a feeling was a short technoversion "Waiting for the train to come in" is the Peggy Lee song recorded July 30, 1945 by Capitol, and found on the Rare gems and hidden treasures released in 2000 marking her 80th birthday. Composed by Martin Block-Sunny Skylar. Paul did the liner notes: "She has the power to move the heart and soul quite unlike any other artist. Her music has always given me a thrill."

The track is also found on the bootleg "Welcom to the Soundcheck" (see http://perso.wanadoo.fr/rattaire/Homemade/WelcomeToTheSoundcheck/welcome.htm). The track was also rehearsed during the 21. april Earls Court soundcheck, see http://www.blackbird.com.br/dirani.php.

And finally there's a review of Gabe Dixon Band in concert October 2002 see http://www.gabedixonband.com/news.html.

The 17.45 instrumental, well I wasn't present, so I can't help. I had to go to do live interviews for the media, what a pity.

Regarding the concert Let me roll it ended "as usual" with Purple Haze.

all the best.

Update (5/6/03) A report on the Copenhagen sound check from Morten Steen Nielsen in Copenhagen:

McCartney Soundcheck - Parken, Copenhagen, May 2nd 2003
Venue: Football Stadium, 47.000 tickets sold (49.000 capacity) By Morten Steen Nielsen, Copenhagen

I went to the Soundcheck in Copenhagen together with about 10 people (competition winners, 1 journalist, 2 artists and record company people). Paul was apparently a little late, Geoff Baker told us as he escorted us past security guards. We were placed on seats to the right of the stage about 50 metres away and we weren't allowed to move closer to the stage or take pictures for that matter. We had expected Paul to arrive at half past four, but that didn't happen. And since the doors were scheduled to open at 18:00 I was a bit disappointed to experience my first soundcheck as a hurried short one, but that didn't happen either! Instead we had more than an hour with Paul running through 13 "real" songs and some various bits and pieces including one new song (to me, anyway)

· 16:30 Paul lands in his private jet in Copenhagen Airport.
· 16:45 A limousine takes him from the airport through the city centre to the Venue nearby. On the way he does a mobile phone interview live on national radio.
· 16:56 The band enters the stage and starts fiddling around
· 17:07 Paul arrives and strolls up on stage, chats with some people from the crew and puts on his Höfner bass.
· 17:14 A roadie/bodyguard brings a bag to Paul onstage. Paul takes out what looks like a magazine, but apparently it turns out to be some kind of sheet music (probably with chords on). Paul and the band stand in front on Wix's podium in a tight circle with their instruments running through this new(?) piece of music. They look quite concentrated and it doesn't sound especially good. After 7 minutes of rehearsing it sounds like some kind of jazzy/swing standard, but they only play the instrumental parts (no vocals) and they never succeed making it sound like a real tune.
· 17:22 COMING UP is performed - there's quite a lot of echo in the big empty arena which Paul also comments afterwards.
· 17:26 Paul welcomes us to his intimate club "Macca" and greets us "Hello to the radio station" - he probably thinks we're the people who were involved with the radio interview he did in the car.
· 17:28 ALL MY LOVING - Abe sings some of the last lines of the lead vocals instead of Paul.
· 17:31 A few times during the session Paul practices some of his trademark high screams "oooh" - he says something funny that we can't really understand, but he looks like he's joking and enjoying himself. He then changes from his Höfner to the Les Paul guitar.
· 17:32 HONEY DON´T with guitar solo by Paul
· 17:34 - 17:37 MATCHBOX
· 17:41 The band suddenly launches into the intro of "I´ve Got A Feeling", but only a few bars. Afterwards Paul is at the grand piano performing a new song, I guess. WAITING FOR THE TRAIN is the main line in the lyrics. Paul plays a long piano solo during the track. Please drop me a line if you know anything about it.
· 17:45 INSTRUMENTAL - this is an instrumental track and a very melodic piece which features the piano as lead instrument. It sounds like a soundtrack to a TV film or something. I've heard it before and I think it must be on the Secret Website which the DVD gives access to. Can anybody help here?
· 17:48 Paul says "thank you for the cherished applause - appreciate it" - He actually says "Thanks" after each song they perform even though it's a very small audience in a very big stadium.
· 17:49 Paul says to the band that he'd like to do a bit of MY LOVE which they perform in a short version.
· 17:52 Paul gets his acoustic guitar
· 17:54 MIDNIGHT SPECIAL is played. In the solo Paul, Abe and Bryan Ray did a funny Shadows-like choreography. There was also an á cappella (only vocals) refrain included. The song ends with the ending from "Mother Nature´s Son". Then they start the song up again, but only for a few bars. Paul then notices the hundred people walking into the stadium at the back of the hall (the bar crew) and says: "There's a leak in the back!". They were actually so many that it looked like the doors had been opened - which they actually were suppose to be a few minutes later at 18:00. Paul then decided to play a "song for the leak":
· 17:57 HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE
· 17:59 The band play a one-chord "instrumental track" - just a few bars.
· 18:01 THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING
· 18:03 The magic piano is carried onto the stage. Meanwhile "That Would Be Something" starts up again with Abe doing some rhythmic clapping with his hand in front of his mouth.
· 18:05 YOU NEVER GIVE ME YOUR MONEY is played on magic piano in the usual new concert version, but continues into a different version with a lot of synthesizer pads by Wix.
· 18:07 FOOL ON THE HILL in short version
· 18:08 LADY MADONNA
· 18:11 The band is apparently through with their rehearsal, and we are quickly escorted out by Tour Publicist Paul Freundlich.

After the soundcheck Paul manages to do a 10 minute interview for Danish TV2, he spends 5 - 10 minutes meeting a hand full of EMI executives and employees, record shop owners and two competition winners for autographs and a photo. He also sits for about ½ hour "learning" Danish from an EMI employee for the night's various introductions. I also expects he gets some food and of course gets dressed - changing his shirt and suit for jeans, t-shirt and purple collarless jacket.

The concert starts with the preshow 20:15 and Paul enters the stage at approximately 20:32 for a phenomenal show!

(5/3/03) From Lars Nielsen, Copenhagen - Review of the McCartney Concert in Parken May 2nd:

Waking up the day after, going down and buying all the national papers, and then reading the reviews from the concert, can be a mixed experience - but: With the McCartney concert yesterday at Parken in Copenhagen, all national papers today gives it top reviews, and calls it outstanding, maccamagic, Maccanificent etc etc - this doesn't happen often.

And it WAS outstanding - being a musician through the last 30 years myself, I know when I'm satisfied with a McCartney show, like so many others, I've seen a lot of them, and yesterday was perfect, just perfect........

Parken filled with 47.000 people is a terrible place to make a good sound in, but yesterday the sound was very very good. Macca arrived at Parken 16.45, on the way from the airport he gave phone interview from the car to the Danish national radio, and after arrival, he gave interview to the Danish TV2 news, and then soundcheck.

The soundcheck lasted about an hour, and delayed everything about 15-20 minutes, numbers played was Honey Don;t, Coming Up, My Love and All My Loving, only about 20 people were at the soundcheck.

The show started 20.15 - and at 20.30 Macca want on stage - he was in a very good mood, his voice was perfect (all through the concert), the band was good, and the spirit from the 47.000 was great. In Scandinavia, we have a reputation of being hard to impress, we don't easily get too exited. Like the Americans do, we usually have both feet planted solid on the ground, but yesterday everybody turned themselves loose, and it sounds great when 47.000 sang along with all the songs.

At 23.15 the show was over - nearly 3 hours of Maccamagic, 23.45, the buses drove back to the airport. McCartney was 8 hours in Copenhagen - and earned about 2 million danish kroner an hour, not bad.....

You all know the numbers, but for the record here they are: Hello Goodbye, Jet, All My Loving, Getting Better, Let Me Roll It, Lonely Road, Your Loving Flame, Blackbird (which maybe got the biggest applause) Every Night, We Can Work It Out, Carry That Weight, Fool On the Hill, Here Today, Something, Eleanor Rigby, Here There and Everywhere,I've Just Seen a Face, Calico Skies, Two of Us, Michelle, Band on the Run (with the new start), Back in the USSR, Maybe I'm Amazed, Let 'Em In, My Love, She's Leaving Home, Can't Buy Me Love, Birthday, Live and Let Die, Let It Be, Hey Jude - The long and winding road, Lady Madonna, I Saw Her Standing There - Yesterday, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, The End.....

What a night - I went to the concert with my mom who is 74 years, and she enjoyed it just as much as me, I was lucky to get her a VIP seat, so she went right through in front of everybody else, while I had to stand in line for nearly an hour to get in, as security was tight. (and 30 minutes to get out again after the concert).
