Paul Budapest 5/15/03

(5/20/03) From Gabor Peterdi:

Paul arrived to Budapest by his private jet from Vienna around 3 a.m and were driven to Hotel Kempinski, where a group of fans were already waiting for him. He signed autographs and entered the hotel soon after. Around noon he went bicycling around Budapest and did a short interview to TV2 a Hungarian television supporting his Budapest concert. He left the hotel in the afternoon - again many fans were waiting for him. He did not sign this time, but stopped long enough for the fans and press to take many photos. He was driven to the brand new Budapest Arena afterwards in a huge limo escorted by police bikes.

The concert was as usual, except that the Hungarian fans went absolutely wild for him. During the first two songs he was a bit puzzled that everyone was shouting the lyrics to his songs and screaming like mad. This was the first time for any Beatle to play in Hungary, so it was foreign ground for him. He was amused and said he was very pleased to come to Budapest and thanked for the great reception. He took the time to learn quite a lot of Hungarian sentences and he spoke with such great pronunciation we were flattered. He is just the greatest musician ever!

The band played tight had great contact with the audience, both guitarists jumping and shaking their heads wildly and our beloved drummer just being great as he is. They too were surprised at the mass adulation.here was Beatlemania in 2003 again! Paul played Here Today for John and the audience started shouting 'We Love John' when he finished, after Something the same thing happened, this time 'We Love George' was the theme. Paul - really gasping for his breath said: yeah we love them - had some problems singing Something. He stopped and said - this is life, and started again. He was really moved. Ringo also got a tribute with Yellow Submarine, which the audience asked for and Paul happily obliged.

During Band On The Run Paul read the slogan on our board saying: 'Band On The Run - Play For The Hun' and liked it so much he went and pointed it out to his guitartist. They were smiling ear to ear and played the song straight to us. One of the greatest moment of my life. When the first encore came the Hungarian audience did not stop the 'nanana' part of Hey Jude and kept singing it for minutes until the band emerged. Paul was again showing that it was really great we never stopped singing. When the shouting parts at songs before the solos came the whole arena was shouting, Paul mimicking as if a great wind was pushing him to the drum kit. It was really noisy and wild!

After the concert I managed to have my White Album signed, so a great big dream came true this magic night. The whole concert was just one great celebration of the man and his mates who gave us hope, happiness and colorized our lives during those grey and stupid times in the communist era. Thank you Paul! Now you know Hungarians love you madly!

In just a couple of minutes Paul returned to the hotel where some friends (who payed an extra fair to a taxi if it manages to get to the hotel earlier than the man) were waiting. They all got their autographs and still in heaven when I am writing this. Paul spent the next day in Budapest. He went sightseeing and visited a veggie restaurant which belongs to boxing champion Kovacs Istvan (KoKo). He ordered cheese and greek salad and drank black tea. He left the hotel at 6.20 pm with Hungarian girls jumping on the back of his limo. One managed to sneak a photo inside the car, but Paul said he could not sign it. The car left and in about a 100 meter distance we saw that a hand appear at the window and the picture was thown out of the car.SIGNED! The girl ran there, picked it up and.. is still in coma I think :0)

Paul and his crew loved Budapest and he said that the Hungarian audience was the best on the tour so far. We put Hungary on his mental map I am sure!
