(3/31/03) From Jordi and Amparo, a review of the first show:

Hi Steve! Hi to all Macca fans.

We are Jordi and Amparo, and yes..., we were there and it was terrific!!! Before the concert we were able to listen some songs of the soundcheck: India, Honey don’t, Two of us and Midnight special. At 7.15 pm the doors were open. The “Palau de Sant Jordi” was crowded, full up, because all the tickets were sold in the first 48 hours.

The show started 30 minutes late, around 10 pm instead of 9.30 pm. The show began under the powerful music of The Fireman. This pre-show was the same as Driving USA and Back in The US Tour. After 20 minutes, all the characters disappeared of stage and... behind a gigantic Paul’s figure image, He appeared accompanied on all his band. When he came in holding his Hofner high above his head it was maddening, the crowd screamed and... IT WAS INDESCRIBABLE!!!

Paul wore jeans, a blue jacket and a red T-shirt, as in the Back in the US Tour. And he began the show with HELLO, GOODBYE and JET.

After JET, he spoke to audience with a “HOLA ESPAÑA, BONA NIT BARCELONA” (Hello Spain, in Spanish. Good Evening Barcelona, in Catalan).

Paul spoke many times in Spanish, and sometimes in catalan, thanking us our ovations very often with a “MUCHAS GRACIAS” (Thank you very much, in Spanish), saying we were a wonderfull audience and putting his hands in his chest, marking his heart and giving it to us. After ALL MY LOVING, he told us his purpose of speaking “sometimes in English sometimes in Spanish”.

Paul presented GETTING BETTER saying that it was the first time he played it in Spain. And after he performed COMING UP. LET ME ROLL IT finished with a little jam, unheard in the American concerts.

Then Paul took his blue jacket off leaving it at the stage floor, and saying “Hace mucho calor” (It’s very hot). Tha Band performed while an “erotic striptease” music.

Then he performed songs of his last album, LONELY ROAD, DRIVING RAIN AND YOUR LOVING FLAME. He playd this last song at piano, and he dedicated it to: “A LA MEVA DONA HEATHER” (to my wife Heather, in catalan”, saying that she was EXTRAORDINARIA (extraordinary in Spanish).

Then Paul introduced BLACKBIRD as a song dedicated to a black woman. After EVERY NIGHT, the crowd began to sang all together “OE OE OE OE!, a common “song” in our football-soccer teams, and Paul began to conduct people with his hands.

WE CAN WORK IT OUT was followed by the Spanish poem from Liverpool Oratorio, “TRES CONEJOS”. A “classic” in all Spanish concerts of the last tours.

People enjoyed YOU NEVER GIVE ME YOUR MONEY / CARRY THAT WEIGHT and THE FOOL ON THE HILL. After Fool on the Hill, Paul took the accoustic guitar and began to play a couple of verses of “BESAME MUCHO”, and then the crowd started also to sing, completing the verses, forcing Paul to finish the theme with the final chords with his guitar (cha cha boom), saying “no, no, no”.

Before HERE TODAY, Paul presented it as a song dedicated to MI AMIGO JOHN (my friend John in Spanish). The crowd began to clap and then they started to sing “Give peace a chance”, in reference to the war in Irak. Paul performed some chords and he moved his hands conducting people.

The following song, SOMETHING, was dedicated to MI AMIGO GEORGE. Paul appeared with an ukelele, saying that A GEORGE LE GUSTABA EL UKELELE (George loved ukelele), and again people applauded with emotion. In this time, Paul did not perform the last fast version of other shows.

Then Paul performed ELEANOR RIGBY, HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE and CALIKO SKIES. Before MICHELLE, Paul shout: “AHORA VENID CON NOSOTROS A FRANCIA” (Now come with us to France) BAND ON THE RUN drove the audience mad and BACK IN THE USSR was GREAT!!!. When he finished playing it there were scenes of wild enthusiasm, with the crowd shouting “PAUL, PAUL”, while he conducted people again with his hands. The audience was mad, and people began to shout “OE OE OE OE” another time.

At piano, Paul performed then MAYBE I’M AMAZED and LET ‘EM IN. And then, he said MY LOVE was dedicated to LINDA and... ESTA NOCHE A TODOS LOS ENAMORADOS (this night to all people in love). This produced another great ovation. SHE’S LEAVING HOME, CAN’T BUY ME LOVE AND... BIRTHDAY!!!

The Beatles soul was there. It was fantastic!!! Birthday, the new feature of the BACK IN THE WORLD tour, along with CALICO SKIES, performed only in Osaka), was presented with a “CUMPLEAÑOS FELIZ” (birthday in Spanish).

LIVE AND LET DIE was thrilling, with his firecrackers, his explotions and his flames at the end. LET IT BE!!! Not words for it. Really touching and moving for us.

And the apotheosis, HEY JUDE, when the audience got delighted, with a funny Paul conducting at the end the male and female sections, and with Heather in the screen, singing joined the crowd. In the first encore, back to the stage, Paul changed his t-shirt for another, also red, but with a white printed message: NO MORE LANDMINES.

THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD, LADY MADONNA and I SAW HER STANDING THERE, completed this first encore. People began to shout again “OE OE OE OE” and “PAUL, PAUL, PAUL”, and Paul and the band appeared again in stage: Paul with a catalonian flag, Abe Laboriel Jr with a Spanish flag, and Paul “Wix” Wickens with a British, and smaller, flag. YESTERDAY was moving and touching again. And SGT. PEPPERS/THE END, the sublime colophon of the show.

The Band was specially great in the “heavy” themes. BAND ON THE RUN, BACK IN THE USRR, BIRTHDAY, CAN’T BUY ME LOVE, LIVE AND LET DIE AND I SAW HERE STANDING THERE sparked off the PALAU DE SANT JORDI.

Each member of the band presented a song in Spanish, less Rusty Anderson, that said he was not able to speak in Spanish, but... he got an small tape recorder and a female voice gave thanks to audience in Spanish for the enthusiastic welcome. About Merchandising, the Tour programme was new, with a new cover and different photos from the American tour. A poster, a set of 4-badges, stickers, a bag with incense, a keyring, a white cup, a blue bag to carry a guitar, a sweater, a jean jacket, and 6 differents T-shirts were sold in The Palau.

In all the walls there was a poster where we could read: COMPRA MAÑANA EL DISCO DEL CONCIERTO DE ESTA NOCHE” (Buy tomorrow the disc of tonight concert)

Before the show, a big screen displayed messages from the public, that we could send by phone, most of them greeting Paul, and thanking his venue to Barcelona. Unluckily, a little number of them were unfortunate and in extraordinarily bad taste.

It was a great evening! One of the best of our life.

Dreaming for another chance to see him!!

And here, Jordi and Amparo review the second show:

Hi Steve, We hope you enjoy our second show review.

Here again. We are Jordi and Amparo, and yes..., we also were there and it was more terrific and touching than the day before!!! We hope you’ll enjoy our review!

The concert was similar but with some differences. And we can feel a deeper emotion and a more nostalgic feeling that on Friday, in part because we were in the first row, resting on in the fence, in front of the piano, with a perfect view of the stage and with a perfect view of Paul.

The show started 20 minutes late, at 9:50 pm instead of 9.30 pm. The show began again under the powerful music of The Fireman. Then the Hofner figure and... PAUL IN THE STAGE. When He came in holding his Hofner high above his head it was again maddening, the crowd screamed and... IT WAS INDESCRIBABLE!!! PAUL WAS ONLY A FEW METERS FROM US!!! Paul wore jeans, a blue jacket and a red T-shirt again.

Heather and her sister Fiona were during all the concert in front of us. Only with the fence between her and us. Fiona made a lot of photos during all the concert, and Heather, Fiona and Paul Wickens’s wife sang the most part of the songs.

He began with HELLO GOODBYE. After JET, he spoke to audience with a “HOLA ESPAÑA, BONA NIT BARCELONA” (Hello Spain, in spanish. Good Evening Barcelona, in catalan), as the night before. Although he spoke many times in Spanish and in catalan, he was not as generous in his speech, but, instead, he seemed more relaxed, and this allowed more surprises, some yellow surprises. Paul performed ALL MY LOVING, and after presented GETTING BETTER saying that it was the first time he played it in Spain. After he performed COMING UP and LET ME ROLL IT, that finished with a little jam, unheard in the american concerts. Then Paul took his blue jacket off leaving it at the stage floor, and saying “Hace mucho calor” (It’s very hot), while The Band performed as on Friday an “erotic striptease” music. After Let me Roll it, some people asked for “BESAME MUCHO” but Paul answered: “Later.” Then he performed songs of his last studio album, LONELY ROAD, DRIVING RAIN AND YOUR LOVING FLAME. He played this last song at piano. When he sat down for playing it, he said in a perfect Spanish : APRENDI ESPAÑOL EN LA ESCUELA, A LOS ONCE AÑOS, CUANDO ERA PEQUEÑO (I learned Spanish at school, when I was eleven, when I was a child). Then he dedicated the song to: “A LA MEVA DONA HEATHER” (to my wife Heather, in catalan”, saying that she was EXTRAORDINARIA (extraordinary in Spanish).

Then we enjoyed BLACKBIRD, EVERY NIGHT and WE CAN WORK IT OUT. This song was followed again by the Spanish poem from Liverpool Oratorio, “TRES CONEJOS EN UN ARBOL TOCANDO EL TAMBOR, QUE SI, QUE NO, QUE SI LO HE VISTO YO!”. More songs kindled the audience: YOU NEVER GIVE ME YOUR MONEY / CARRY THAT WEIGHT (with the wrong words like in the USA tour) and THE FOOL ON THE HILL.

After Fool on the Hill, Paul took the accoustic guitar and began to play a couple of verses of “BESAME MUCHO”. The crowd started also to sing, as the night before, completing the verses. Paul played then again, a little more than on Friday, saying also “no, no, no” at the end, but without the “cha cha boom” last chords .

Before HERE TODAY, Paul presented it as a song dedicated to MI AMIGO JOHN (my friend John in Spanish). The crowd began to clap and to shout all together the name of John. And then they started to sing “Give peace a chance”. Paul performed some chords and he moved his hands conducting people, but also began to sing with the audience, unlike Friday.

The following song, SOMETHING, was dedicated to MI AMIGO GEORGE. Paul appeared with an ukelele, saying that A GEORGE LE GUSTABA EL UKELELE (George loved ukelele), and again people applauded with emotion, and began to shout all together the name of George.

Amazingly, after Something, the crowd began to shout the name of Ringo. A funny and surprised Paul said : “BUT RINGO IS WELL”, and he laughted, but immediatelly he began to play and sing YELLOW SUBMARINE. The crowd and The band (mainly Abe Laboriel Jr) joined Paul with the song. Paul was really enjoying the show and sharing his emotions with us!!! It was not a complete song, it was only an entertainment of a couple of verses, but it was really special for us.

Then Paul performed ELEANOR RIGBY, HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE and CALIKO SKIES. This lovely song was still better that the night before, with a very good performing by Paul.

Before MICHELLE, Paul also shout: “AHORA VENID CON NOSOTROS A FRANCIA” (Now come with us to France) BAND ON THE RUN and BACK IN THE USSR were shaking!!!.

At piano, Paul performed then MAYBE I’M AMAZED and LET ‘EM IN. And MY LOVE was again dedicated to LINDA and to all people in love.. SHE’S LEAVING HOME, CAN’T BUY ME LOVE AND... BIRTHDAY!!! Birthday was presented by Paul Wickens and Paul said “CUMPLEAÑOS FELIZ”.

During all the concert, Paul and Heather demonstrated their complicity. Paul winked at her, and Heather smiled all the time. Before LIVE AND LET DIE began, Security staff, adviced her to change of place, because of the firecrackers, and flames, and she moved a little, but at the end she returned in front of us..

LET IT BE!!! Not words for it. Really touching and moving for us, more than ever, because the proximity of the more fabulous musical genius and compositor in the world.

And the apotheosis, HEY JUDE, when the audience got delighted, with a funny Paul conducting at the end the male and female sections, and with Heather moving hands with us, in a perfect conjunction.

But... before Hey Jude, Paul surprised us with a small present: a snippet of BABY FACE.

At the end of Hey Jude, when Paul used to say to the crowd “You’re great!”, “You’re great!”, “You’re great!”, when he arrived to Heather he made a funy face and a movement of his hand, meaning “you only half great”, smiling after this.

In the first encore, back to the stage, Paul changed his t-shirt for another, the same of the night before, with a white printed message: NO MORE LANDMINES. He asked to the crowd: “¿QUEREIS MAS? (do you want more?) and the audience shouted: SI!!!!!!

THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD, LADY MADONNA and I SAW HER STANDING THERE, completed as always this first encore. People began to shout again “OE OE OE OE” and “PAUL, PAUL, PAUL”, and Paul and the band appeared again in stage: Paul with a catalonian flag, this time Brian Ray with a Spanish flag, and Paul “Wix” Wickens with a british, and smaller, flag.

YESTERDAY was moving and touching again. And SGT. PEPPERS/THE END, the sublime colophon of the show.

And this morning, we have received a message in our mobile phone from Paul: "Hope you had a wonderful time at the concert. It was great to play Barcelona! Checkout the DVD & CD of the show - Back In The World. Gracias! Paul McCartney"

Thanks to you, SIR PAUL.

JORDI AND AMPARO P.S. We are working in a web site, in order to compiling all the news about the two concerts, with the photos we made, the tickets, the posters and more. When we have it finished we will tell you. ******************************************************************************************** **** MELGAR**** http://es.geocities.com/melgar_beatles/ *******************************************************************************************

And from Adolfo Iglesias:

Hello from Almeria (Spain) where John wrote Strawberry Fields,

More than a review of the two shows of Paul in Barcelona I want to point at a few details of his performaces.

  • In the first one, Paul mainly spoke in Spanish to the audience by reading a note in the floor. He also recited the famous children poem in Spanish that was taucht at school about three rabbits -see the Mexican review-.

  • The songs list was the same than listed in previous concerts.
  • The crowd sang again "Give peace a chance" but not in the end of Here today like in Paris but before it. Paul did not sum up with us only waved his arm. Important: PAUL SANG the line of the chorus in the second show the day after. Besides, people in the Sant Jordi Palace shout in Spanish "No war" and Paul did not react. (I am sure this will be repeated in the whole European tour).

  • Some people in the front shouted to him "torero" bullfighter or "matador". This is a flattery and praise expression in Spanish but I would not have said to him knowing he is an animal rights defender. Paul tried to stop them. I felt this was a general reaction of him, he tried to drive the show as previously written even in the moments it looked as spontaneaous.

  • Also important: in the second show someone shouted Ringo after the two homages to John and George and Paul reacted saying Ringo is a good guy and sang a short piece of "Yellow submarine".

  • In the end of the shows Paul and someone else appeared in the stage holding tow flags: one of Spain and another of Catalonia, the region or state where Barcelona is in.

Well, I beg you pardon for my english, Jordi and Amparo will do it much better. Thanks for you work Steve. And regards from the place where John Lennon wrote Strawberry Fields in 1966.
