Our thoughts on the "Concert For George" film

Rather than do a full-length review and rehash what others have already said, here are just some thoughts we had as we watched it:

  • Make sure you see the film in a theater with exceptional sound. We saw it in a theater with a wonderful surround sound system and it felt like being onstage.
  • If you're gonna see it, don't wait. We went Friday night (opening night) at 8 p.m. and the theater had less than 10 people. It won't be around long at that rate.
  • Bring hankies. At least one of the speeches (we won't say which) and one event will get to you.
  • Forget all that talk in the New York Post about bad feelings onstage between Paul and Ringo, and also Paul being miffed about the band breaking into his ukelele version of "Something." Untrue. The proof's onscreen.
  • The performers are awesome. Absolutely incredible. Standouts: Jeff Lynne, Sam Brown (dynamite on "Horse to the Water"), the Pythons, Billy Preston, Eric Clapton and Joe Brown. But the whole band is top notch ... and they probably didn't rehearse more than a week in advance.
  • In "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," Eric Clapton repeats the solo from the record, which he did originally, perfectly. The song is one of the highlights of the show.
  • Yes, we didn't mention Paul in the list above because he deserves his own item. There are times that Paul will walk through his songs, but his performance in this concert is outstanding, one of the best he's done in the last decade. His version of "For You Blue" is off the charts. Paul really put his soul into the show and it showed in the result.
  • On the other hand, couldn't Ringo do something different than the same songs he does on tour for an occasion like this? Yeah, Ringo's not the greatest vocalist, but who really would have cared?
  • We may go see it again. It's well worth it...
